The Changing Mountain

We all know the rules, Stay Home or is it Stay Alert or perhaps Make Space?

All have been important rules at important times but with businesses each trying to do adapt their workforce into a future proof way of working that maintains productivity while protecting wellbeing, the mammoth task continues to add peaks to an already almighty mountain. Like the ever-changing COVID advice, we must also regularly adapt and change to suit business needs.

As a recruiter, I am always curious about workplaces and how and where people work and why they do the jobs they do, call me a recruitment nerd but it is what I do and asking the questions of everyone I can allows me to take a measured view. Some tell me how they love working from home, they can focus and are working with fewer distractions, other say that they can duck out here and there to keep the home running and manage workload by working into the evening but some say that they miss being around people while working and struggle to be noticed or heard during team video calls. One thing is for sure, there is no silver bullet to this situation which understandably is making the role of the Manager, HR and all Business Leaders ever more challenging.

So what are our clients asking for when hiring?

  • Temps, Temps and more Temps – In uncertain times, being able to expand and contract staff numbers quickly with little risk this is a sure way to make.
  • Video Interviewing – We screen the candidates using role-related questions, our clients are selecting those who are most suited to the role for the next stage, this limits having to see a lot of people in person.
  • Fixed Term Contracts – There is a need for full commitment but the business is a little unstable
  • Salary Advice, Can we pay less now that there are more candidates, my answer, absolutely not.
  • Workplace options – Does the candidate have the ability to work from home, could they easily commute to the office if things change?
