Let’s explore First Interview Tips: 7 Simple Strategies for Success together and help you feel more at ease as you enter the interview room!

  1. Prepare for your interview like a Pro.

Take some time to reflect on your professional journey and the skills you’ve acquired. Understanding what unique value you bring to your next potential employer is crucial. Create a personalised list of your qualities and the benefits you offer. Ask yourself: What impact have you made in previous roles? How can you assist a future employer in achieving their goals? What would a company gain by hiring you? What did you do that changed the game? Keeping a list with you will ensure you stay on the path and appear concise and diligent. If you are in a role where the numbers are important because they might demonstrate the scope and size of your remit, keep a note of them and be sure to tell the interviewer so that they can assess your suitability in relation to the role.

  1. What Are You Wearing to the Interview?

First impressions matter in fact they are more critical than ever, so dress for the job you aspire to have, whether in person or on a virtual call. Your choice of clothing should reflect professionalism and respect for the opportunity. Casual home clothes might not convey your seriousness for the process, so choose outfits that resonate with making a positive impact, the role and your desire to get to the next interview stage.

  1. We Can Hear It in Your Voice.

During a phone interview, experienced interviewers will focus on your words and assess everything they hear; it’s not just what you say but how you say it. Interviewers will notice your tone, pauses and any background noise. To make a solid first impression, find a quiet space for your call, don’t be tempted to multi-task, and Keep as far away from distractions as possible. Have your CV and the job description ready for easy reference. This will show you are ready and actively participating in a two-way conversation.

  1. Create a Great Interview Experience.

Building rapport with the interviewer is essential. Remember that they will be vouching for you later, risking their reputation by recommending you as a great fit. Highlight relevant experience and capabilities early, and ensure they feel confident in your ability to impress in subsequent rounds. Do your homework on the organisation and the person interviewing you. This will give you the chance to engage in a meaningful way while showing appreciation for their time.

  1. What’s Behind You?

When it comes to video interviews, distractions can really undermine your message. Choose a calm, uncluttered background for your call to keep the interviewer focused on you. If there are distractions, don’t hesitate to relocate to a more serene setting, if you find yourself at a place that is getting busier by the second and you are struggling to stay engaged, acknowledge this and offer a reschedule. Your focus should be on delivering a great conversation.

  1. In the Interview, you must land your point.

Interviewers want concise and relevant answers. To avoid rambling and make a strong impression, use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Start by briefly describing the context (Situation), then explain the challenge or objective (Task). Next, detail the specific actions you took (Action – focus on your contributions). Finally, describe the positive outcome or results you achieved (Result). Quantify your results whenever possible (e.g., “increased sales by 15%”). This structured approach keeps your answers focused and demonstrates your problem-solving abilities.

  1. To follow up or not to follow up.

Before wrapping up your initial interview, clarify the next steps. If you feel the conversation went well, it’s a good idea to follow up within a few hours. Send a thoughtful message thanking the interviewer for their time, reaffirming your interest, and expressing enthusiasm about the opportunity. This not only shows your appreciation but also keeps you fresh in their mind.
