In the past few years there has been a major battle for talent. With the post pandemic boom, many experienced exponential growth, which warranted the extra headcount. However, as things settle and in some cases, go backward, we are seeing a need to reduce headcount in most companies. It seems uncertain times are with us for the next year at least.
Hiring people when times are uncertain can be dangerous for morale. The mere words lay-off and redundancies send people into worry. It could be time to consider which of the open requirements are business critical and which bring the most risk.
During the 2008 financial crisis, I worked with many clients to guide their businesses through by supplying temporary and interim workers for business-critical roles. We hired experienced people to undertake roles that required speed and skill for short bursts during peak periods. During downtimes, we removed the headcount to allow our clients to save cash and reduce the need to make redundancies.
